As the newly appointed "Mighty," you must guide the Patapons through a challenging expedition filled with danger, discovery, and rhythm. These delicate but determined warriors rely on your leadership to survive harsh environments and overcome terrifying enemies. Their stamina is limited, and the journey is long, but with your guidance, they will not accept defeat.
Rhythm-Based Command System
At the core of Patapon lies a unique rhythm-based combat and movement system. Players issue commands using a four-beat rhythm pattern made up of just four drums: PON, PATA, CHAKA, and DON. Each combination of beats results in different actions:
- "PON PON PATA PON" – Attack!
- "CHAKA CHAKA PATA PON" – Defend!
- Other combinations allow the Patapons to march, retreat, take cover or other commands.
Executing commands in time with the beat allows players to build combos. Connect enough successful combos, and the Patapons enter Fever Mode—a state in which their attacks are powered up with increased damage, more arrows, and charge abilities. During Fever Mode, players can also use the Juju Rhythm, a special beat that lets them manipulate the weather to their advantage.
Battling the Elements and Foes
The Patapons’ journey to Earthend is fraught with hazards. From freezing snowfields to scorching deserts—and even high above the clouds—the terrain and weather constantly challenge your timing and tactics. Meanwhile, monstrous enemies attack from all sides, sparing no one, not even the weakest Patapons.
But the Patapons can fight back. By building a balanced squad, players can face each stage's threats more effectively. There are nine powerful unit classes, each with its own strengths, such as:
- Tatepon with its energy field that makes allies temporarily invincible.
- Kibapon, known as "The Destroyer," deals devastating rush attacks.
- Special Hero Characters, introduced in Patapon 2, bring powerful abilities to your team.
Strategically choosing the right classes for each encounter is key to surviving and thriving.
Unit Customization and Progression
To stand against increasingly fearsome foes, your Patapons must grow stronger. Using items gathered during battle or mini-games, you can level up units, evolve them into Rarepons, and equip them with gear. With over 400 types of equipment available, no two squads will be the same. Careful management of your team’s equipment and evolution path will help you build the strongest unit possible.
