The Summit War begins

In their adventures in Water Seven, Usopp returned and Franky joined the crew. The crew sets sail again on their new ship, the Thousand Sunny.

Elsewhere, Luffy's sworn older brother and son of King of the Pirates Gol D. Roger, Ace is after the traitor Blackbeard as 2nd Division Commander of Whitebeard's Pirates. Ace finally finds Teach on Banero Island, but loses the fight and is captured by the marines. The marines see him as dangerous because he has the blood of the King of the Pirates, and take him to their headquarters in Marineford, with plans to execute him in front of the whole world.

Whitebeard's Pirates and other well-known pirates under their banner band together in Marineford harbor to rescue Ace. The marines bring their strongest to wage war against them, and even the Seven Warlords of the Sea gather at the government's request. The three forces with enough power to shake the world meet in Marineford.

The conflict that will go down in infamy as the Paramount War begins.

Between Admirals and Emperors

Whitebeard, captain of Whitebeard's Pirates that Ace belongs to. He is one of the powerful Four Emperors who reign over the last half of the Grand Line, and is said to have the "power to destroy the world." An all-out melee between both forces breaks out, and powerful fighters clash all over Marineford.

During the chaos, Luffy arrives in Marineford with the prisoners of Impel Down who he escaped with after infiltrating the prison to save Ace. He dashes across the battlefield to free his brother, fearing not even the likes of Whitebeard. Luffy progresses, facing powerful enemies, without letting Ace's worried voice stop him. He's badly wounded, but gets enough help that he finally arrives at the gallows where Ace is.

A brother’s sacrifice

Luffy runs to Ace with everyone's assistance. He avoids the attacks of Garp, a Marine vice admiral who is also his grandfather, and Sengoku, the fleet admiral. The Straw Hat captain saves Ace at the last second. The two brothers are surrounded by sailors as they return from the gallows, but they fight together to defeat them all.

Sensing his time has come, Whitebeard tells everyone to go, while he stays behind. He orders everyone to retreat. The pirates attempt to leave, but Ace stops as Akainu berates Whitebeard for being a loser. Akainu's Mag-Mag Fruit power is superior to Ace's Flame-Flame Fruit power, however, making the fight nearly unwinnable to begin with. The admiral avoids Ace, and instead aims for Luffy.

Ace instantly protects his little brother, and is mortally wounded as Akainu's fist pierces his chest.

"...someone like me who is so worthless. Someone with such bad blood in his veins... Thank you... for loving me!"

With those final words, Ace's life ends.

Losses and hopes

Shocked at Ace's death, the pirates rescue Luffy and retreat. Whitebeard uses the last bit of his strength to take down the sailors. That's when the crew led by "Blackbeard" Teach attack.

After using his title as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea to get the worst criminals out of Impel Down, Blackbeard sets his sights on Whitebeard. The Emperor is severely wounded by Blackbeard's attack, and his last words before he dies are "Gold Roger's lost treasure exists."

Sengoku faces off with Blackbeard. The pirates continue their fight with the marines after losing Whitebeard and Ace. A sailor risks his life to stop the fighting on the chaotic battlefield, and, as if in answer, "Red-Haired" Shanks of the Four Emperors appears.
