New Little Nightmares III DLC Character Revealed in Chapter 1 - The Backstage

Stare into The Spiral and let your mind wander.

DLC - The Backstage

As you sink deeper and deeper, let’s find out more about the places you’ll encounter in this first chapter. Count backwards from three and feel yourself fall into The Nowhere.

The Hunt for a Friend – Who Captured Alone?

Low has a vision of Alone being captured by an unknown Resident and sets off to find her. This search will take him and a new playable partner named Dime even deeper into The Vault of Curiosities and a completely new area of Carnevale known as The Backstage.

Dime – A New Playable Character

Certain Visitors seem drawn to particular areas of The Nowhere, and Dime seems to have found a tentative equilibrium here in The Vault of Curiosities. She roams through the halls, protected from the chilling touch of The Lost Remains thanks to her torch hat.

Dime seems to understand Low as an ally almost immediately. In a world full of dangers that includes certain Visitors, she seems fairly at ease working with a stranger, guiding him through The Vault without hesitation. She also seems to understand his attachment to Alone, and his desire to find her.

She even goes so far as to offer Low his own torch hat, one that she had hidden away in a safe room. Is it a spare that she was saving for emergencies? Maybe it belonged to someone else long ago…

Curiouser and Curiouser – Who is This Vault For?

Low and Alone explored a part of The Vault of Curiosities and Carnevale in the main story of the Little Nightmares III, but here, we find Low waking up in a different area of The Vault where doors are protected by eyes that must be blinded with a flash of bright light to open. Interesting.

It’s unclear exactly who is the intended audience for The Vault’s extensive expositions. It seems linked to Carnevale by location and theme, and yet, The Herd never crowds through its narrow halls to gawk at its bizarre displays and dioramas. The shelves are dusty, the glass cases are clouded with age, furniture is stacked in haphazard heaps, the entire vast complex seems almost abandoned.

Here among the thick-piled rugs and creaking wooden floors, there’s also ample space in the endless abandoned halls for small creatures to find room to nest. Dime has a familiarity with The Vault that may speak to an extended stay.

There is some evidence that darker designs may be in progress in the deep floors of The Vault. Someone was rather recently using the facilities for what appears to be scientific exploration, although an equipment malfunction seems to have put an end to their line of inquiry. Examples of other Visitors who have met untimely ends are easy to stumble across.  

There are other traces left behind in the form of UV-activated paint. These smears and hand prints can be revealed by a flash from Dime’s helmet, drawing attention to things that others have found hidden in these musty archives.

The Vault of Curiosities may not be as loud and raucous as the rain-lashed boardwalks of Carnevale, but Visitors let their guard down in this esoteric museum at their own risk.

Behind the Curtain – Going Backstage

Every theater needs its support staff, and The Backstage is where many of those clattering extras are born. That’s the work of The Puppeteer, a sinister new Resident who is busily producing the Puppets that staff the Carnevale’s boardwalk. Alone could be her next victim unless you act quickly.  

The Backstage is also where the abandoned props of Carnevale are left to rot. It’s another type of museum in its own way, a collection of abandoned costumes, wigs, and scenery that has become a nest for The Lost Remains – shadowy constructs that look like children.  

Stay alert as you explore or they’ll quickly add your shadow to their ranks.
